I road the WP&Y back in late July 2012 via a cruise. We were one day ahead of the normal Fraser Meadows Steam Excursion which I think ran Mondays and Fridays back then. I want to say our ship was in on a Thursday. Without the possibility of riding behind steam, my wife and I opted to take the Carcross option and then bus back. You are the first train out in the morning and see the entire operating portion of the railroad including Bennett Lake then they bus you back (or the opposite, you bus up there and then train back down). It was a great ride for sure! Our train also did ferry hikers and had basically one coach for them and one coach for us that were going through. On our train was also a group of railfans. They took our train to the summit and was going to photograph the days operations up there and then I guess take one of the evening trains back down. My memory is fuzzy but I think one of them maybe posted on here? If you wanted to do something like that, I am thinking calling the railroad and they could set you up with a ticket out on an early train and back in on a later one maybe. My one regret with the Carcross run was we didn't get to see any of Skagway. We were told to be the first off the boat and were the last back on (they did wait for us though, I recommend booking the Carcross run through the cruise line so they have to wait for you since it is a long trip).
