Compounds in general were all the rage back in 1903. Baldwin's version, the Vauclain -- named for its inventer Samual Vauclain, was very popular for awhile, but due to maintenance costs, nearly all, like the k-27s were soon converted.
They had four cylinders. Engines with large drivers usually had the smaller, high pressure cylinders on top, those with small drivers had the low pressure cylinders on top.
