This locomotive is the third C-C diesel locomotive built for domestic USA use. This is not counting the C-C units built for the U.S. Army for overseas service during WWII.

The first two C-C diesels were built by GE for Illinois Central in the 1930s when it bought a sampling of diesels for Chicago area (anti-smoke) transfer and switching service.
