So I got a response from Bret Bane on Facebook that answers and begs more questions:
“Here are 3 Google Earth views of the White Pine area with the grades drawn in. Brian Fosback saw this post and sent the maps to my email. He and his dad Terry Fosback are very meticulous in their grade exploration and mapping. They confirm grades by using a specially tuned metal detector to find a sufficient number of iron artifacts to leave no doubt in their minds as to what was a grade and what was a truck, Cat. or wagon trail.”
So now I see; the BWP mill is some distance off the SVRy mainline. On the main is only a wye. At the mill are various tracks, log dump, engine house, and another wye.
I love the wide open country of Eastern Oregon, but because of this available space they used loops and wyes instead of more compact turntables and these take up A LOT of room in an O scale model. I must make some adjustments to my plan...
Oh, and the picture on the bottom of page 93 of Sumpter Valley Logging Railroads is reversed so that won’t fit in my plan either... Mr. Cat is quite incensed.
