It was quite common for a smaller-drivered but often more powerful "freight" locomotive to help a "passenger" engine with less t.e. but potentially greater speed overcome a steep grade — see the first photo on [
ngdiscussion.net] for a classic example. Out west on the S.P. standard gauge line slow but powerful 2-10-2's with 63" drivers were the usual helper power coupled in front of the much faster 80"-drivered Daylight 4-8-4's for the climb up Cuesta Grade north of San Luis Obispo.
