One other thing to consider with the CM story is the temperature. Being in Colorado that story could have taken place on a cold day. Meaning any steam leak is going to seems worse.
When I worked at Knott's at one time we had a packing leak on the 340 that in the early morning hours you could not see. We did fix it.
Dont forget the other pikes peak steam locos 2, 5 and 4.
4 was restored and operated for a time.
