Much of the character and appeal of the Rio Grande narrow gauge is based on tiny trains in huge mountains. Certainly the Silverton line has huge mountains in abundance. Here are three views (video scans) of trains lost in remote sections of the Animas Canyon, and well off the beaten path. ( I'm planning on a few more off-the-beaten-path views in follow up postings)
Seeing the train coming around a bend in the canyon is a bit of a challenge, as it is nearly lost in the immensity
An afternoon train is coasting down the canyon, about to disappear for the next few hours
Earlier in the year, a Cascade turn is about to cross the High Bridge
With the big snowpack last winter, this should be a great season for water falls in the spring and early summer
315 and 463 have their own challenge with mountains, struggling up the 4 percent grade to Cumbres
