Here is how they looked in the shop for major work.

I would think the hoist was a lot quicker than one at a time in a pit and made getting the shop trucks under them easier. No sign of any major overhead crane inside the shop.
Just for contrast here is a view of the much more modern former IRCA backshop in Guatemala City that repaired similar engines, only it was designed in the 1930's whereas the Alamosa shop dates from the 1880's.
