Because we are a museum, yes- 491 still has her original throttle valve. Quite frankly, it's easy to see why the D&S made a new one all those years ago, and why they're repeating the work. 491's valve is a pain in the you know what to remove/re-install with each annual (though you'd think we'd be getting better at it by now), and can be difficult to handle if not completely prepared for it. My most alarming experience with it was while firing during the convention for John Coker. Coming in for the station stop, she jammed the throttle open, and just kept working up grade against a 10lb automatic set! Took all 3 guys in the cab hauling on the thing to shut her down. Some work on that is in the works, though I'm not fully at liberty to disclose.
It's wonderful that we can all work together, seeing as alone any one of these railroads/museum would be a lot harder pressed to keep going as seamlessly as we do. Can't wait to see 493 run guys, and (to be *that* foamer) maybe 497 some day as well
