A friend of mine grew up north of Antonito, we went hunting one year west of Antonito as we drove through he pointed to all the bars and clubs he remembered going to as back in the 70's. Now he moved away shortly thereafter, he has a very large family and most of them did as well. Still a couple left.
His comment was there are much fewer people left, mainly old and poor in simple terms so not much activity. To operate a Hotel what ever for basically a summer business would need heavy subsidies. Certainly not a money maker.
The Lady at the Library explained that the new business were Pot Shops, people come up from New Mexico where it is illegal and stock up, as they can only buy so much from each one there is enough business for I think 3. There was a new coffee shop as well but was not open when I was there.
Alamosa has basically sucked all the business away that was left. Not that far and you have year around business.
