My rule is to treat a rental car like I own it. I completely inspect it before driving off the lot and request that all findings be documented and that I get a copy of that documentation. That has saved my butt several times. When there is pre-existing damage, sure as hell, the lot guy will immediately ask you "somebody hit you?" when you return.
Most of my airport rentals do not involve "lot" guys -- I'm usually given the keys inside the building and told where I can find the car. To do paperwork, I'd have to go back inside and find someone to come outside with me. Rather than waste time doing that, I just go around the car and quickly shoot some crappy pictures of all the sides and corners, framing the images so it is clear they were taken at the pick-up lot. I started doing this 15+ years ago when I got my first digital body and it has saved me a couple of times.
Having typed out that last paragraph, I am now envisioning Kevin being frozen next to a rental car, being unable to press the shutter button because the lighting isn't perfect.
