I was gonna guess it was the Warp Drive for the Millennium Falcon. You just spoiled all my fun!!
(Actually, my first impression was some kind of mortar, but I really think the "engine" explanation makes more sense — mortars shoot at a very high angle, and there's no way to elevate the muzzle of that thing (if it IS a muzzle).)
