I have taken a couple D&S winter photo specials, but the one in February 2010 was really interesting. From a railfan standpoint the D&S can sometimes be difficult to work with, but when they do something they tend to do it well. The challenge in 2010 was snow, lots of it. In addition to sending out a flanger ahead of time to make sure the line was clear, the railroad also enlisted employees and volunteers to clear trails through the deep snow ahead of time so that the photographers would not be wallowing around in waste deep snow, or worse skipping photo locations. Here are two examples.
To get the above picture the railroad cleared a trail through the snow all the way from the tracks down to the river. Perhaps some folks could have made it on their own, but the work the railroad did ahead of time made it a lot easier.
And the trail blazing at Overland Curve really amazed me. If you are familiar with the location this picture was taken from a rock outcropping above the curve. The trail through the rocks to get here was quite difficult, but the railroad had cleared the way making it reasonably easy and a whole lot safer.
