I'd say some of each. In my broadside view, you get an idea of how long the firebox is compared to the rest of the engine, so having support along the sides can't hurt. On the other hand, the dog bone bearers are difficult to set to take an equal share of the weight, and are impossible to later adjust or shim, So I have always looked at them as a mainly a handy way to keep the boiler and frame in one piece while the engine is rolling over down a mountainside (A useful option on the Colorado narrow gauge).
She is well built never the less. For example note that she has eighteen backhead braces on that tiny little backhead. Our #90 has twelve.
