In 2016/17, after 7 futile attempts to seal the inspection hatch by various means and materials, I cut a 1/4 inch thick gasket from pattern, out of NAPA truck mud flap that seemed to work just fine, and, was tested pretty extensively. Roger Hogan filmed the testing. It -was- tested with an industrial compressor.
Note- now that I think about it, it was tested last with a large 4 cylinder military surplus compressor provided by John Cole. That compressor, on skids, would only take up half of the space on the back deck.
I also created some truck flap gaskets for the sand house pressure tank, which passed hydro. It's a nice trick to remember.
If that failed this year (and it may have, due to corrosion), I hadn't heard about it.
What came out of the hatch originally was a kind of a woven asbestos rope gasket, like you would find in a wood stove door. But, like, 1" in diameter.
Because the tank is vertical, which I was told was not prototype, the hatch traps a significant amount of water.
I guess you could put a large compressor right on the back deck-
The hatch- With fresh babbit poured (that didn't work).
The corrosion you see on the hatch is not the problem, but, is representative of the corrosion on the tank lip, which is.
We also priced a new hatch, that may or may not have fit, at $1300. But the corrosion is on the tank lip. The hatch goes -inside- the port, and is held up by the studs and some cross bars.
