The schedule was a pretty good deal for locals going to Denver and back. It was an essentially all day trip from Durango to Alamosa. The train left Durango in the late morning, allowing you to do business in town and eat breakfast before departure. Lunch and dinner were aboard the San Juan. You climbed into your sleeper before departing Alamosa and were in Denver early in the morning. Grab a bite at Denver Union Station, and you have an entire day in Denver to do your business.
After dinner, you got into your Pullman for the trip south, arriving in Alamosa early in the morning. Breakfast and lunch on the San Juan headed east, putting you home in Durango in time for dinner.
Beats riding a bus any day. Air travel back then not only was expensive but unreliable in bad weather. Bad weather also effected bus schedules.
