This is pure speculation on my part, but it probably would have resulted in the delay of retirement of some of the older classes of locomotives. More of the mudhens would have remained in service to cover the Silverton and possibly the Farmington branches. More of the C classes would have to be retained to cover switching and light branch work. The K-28's could be used as helper & road engines on the Durango/Alamosa section.
