Re: 268 and 278 survival & that bell

268 & 278 stayed as long as they did because of restricted bridges on the Baldwin/Castleton branch. It's my understanding that it wasn't so much the bridges as the foundations (wooden mudsills) they sat on, after all C&S had run heavier engines[1] up there before 1911.

As to 268's bell, it was indeed swiped off the engine. Railfans caught the blame although it was known to be at a certain Gunnison area civic group for years.
