Yes, I thought I mentioned that in the text. 012-075, as seen backing to the train. I boarded right after that shot.
This was March 1975, and they were withdrawn less than 2 months later. 120k's,(72 mph) was the speed we were running
most of the time, and the engines were downgraded from 140 t0 120 sometime around 1970 I believe.
The first cab ride is an 023, also happened to be 075!! In the pacific mentioned above it was uncertain weather or not this would
take place but I was told to be in Rheine at a certain time and date, and I must have paid for a ticket and my own way back(ticket).
I was fully expecting to ride from Rheine to Emden, and that would be it. The fireman and I talked and after we left Rheine, he asked if
I wanted to go all the way to Nordeich, and of course I said yes. Then before we arrived he asked me if I want to ride back to Rheine on
the 15:30 train. They went off for lunch after turning the engine. I wanted to get some slides, and the fireman offered to bring me something
and asked for 1 mark. He came back with this huge chunk of fresh smoked fish. I cleaned up with dripping water from the cylinder of 075.
I wound up spending over 6 hours with the engine that day.
One funny thing on the return was they let the inspector run the engine departing Pappenburg. The engine slipped pretty badly, and the regular
crew laughed at him, and they all got a charge out of it. I shot a lot of slides, and only a couple minutes of film. Film was expensive back then for
a guy in his early 20's, traveling on a budget.
No regrets, good times with regular service steam.
