John, Grab one of the red handles (with counter weight) and pull toward you. The fire door opens inward. Not sure if there is any kind of latch or if the counter weights hold it open.

The throttle is the red handle with the line leading to the word Regler. Rotary throttles are pretty common in England and Europe. German locos have as much piping and valves in the cab as they do all over the rest of the loco!
