I think Bill has a point. Certainly upper boards were added to 700 series cars and only 700 series cars had corner brackets, although they normally didn't have a bracket on the lowest boards. However DBG's were so important to the RR that when one needed repair it was fixed very quickly, so this might have been a needed fix. These cars are the devils work to restore especially getting the drop doors to work correctly. The DRHS restored 871, see here for a step by step.

Complicated is an understament. If you scroll down to the bottom you'll see a photo of the restorers including your humble scribe.
There's a funny story about 871. It was restored on private land and the first things removed were the trucks which were stored at one end of the car. Once the car had the frome resoted and the brake gear etc fitted only then was it decided to replace the tracks. Only they were both at one end and we couldn't raise the car high enough for one truck to clear the stuff hanging underneath. Much cribbing took place to no avail until the owner of the land, who was in contruction, came along with a high loader and raised one end of the car high enough for the truck to pass underneath cleanly. Lesson learnt!
