Good question. All siding and wood on doors, and the roof walks, were replaced with douglas fir or oak in one place, as was original. The roofwalk boards are 3 continuous, custom-cut pieces from reclaimed, old timber in Arboles. Very nice wood. The wood was primed with tinted paint prior to assembly, then painted several times with a gloss, enamel boxcar red paint. Turned out pretty slick. All work, from hand nailing to hand lettering, peening over the bolts, square nuts, etc., pulling the brasses and repacking the journals, was done as was original for the car. This was a requirement for the Park Service. Upper side sills and carline brackets were repaired and tightened up. We even patched up a burned-out section of flooring and center sills at one end, where there was a fire long ago.
The car is quite sound now.
The shop crew did an awesome job, and the railroad and Park Service has been wonderful to work with on this project. It's been a great experience. Thanks for all the nice comments.
