Jay: Slight correction: 488 has no flues, so it's kind of hard to do a hydrostatic test (cold water pressure test) with 390 - 2 1/4" and 5 1/2" holes in the boiler :-). It takes a BIG pump to overcome that kind of leak! and it makes a BIG mess in the shop (maybe we can invent a new Water Park Ride).
I think what you are refering to is "Ultrasonic Test" where the steel in the boiler is measured by an ultrasonic device. The data is used in FRA certification of the boiler under the new FRA regs.
