1968 the Wahine foundered in Wellington Harbour, the 7.1 Earthquake struck Inungahua and our primary school had a trip to the West Coast of the South Island. We went by 88seater railcar to the coast and back, apart from seeing a J class on the Limited to Dunedin before we left Christchurch, never saw any other trains bar one Electric powered goods at Otira.

Apparently Chris Bradley [flic.kr] found steam running out its last miles on the coast, a Mixed to Otira to boot.

And look, #375 was still running smiling smiley [flic.kr]

And even running a Heisler on one of the NZR Stores branch lines [flic.kr]
