Thanks, Jerry. That confirms what I thought I know about the car's history. Photos taken at the time the entire train was presented to Central City in 1941 show the coal car in the then current red with the black and white button herald. The paint job that I saw in 1976 looked as if the car had been repainted at least once since 1941. (See photo 1). The paint job in photos 2 and 3 shows what the car looked like in April, 1986. That red looks a bit too bright to be appropriate for the freight car fleet on the C&S narrow gauge, and I understood that this had been done by the tourist railroad attempt which followed the CC.
As to the question about this group of coal cars ever having the large lettering, I leave that to the experts, but I don't think there was evidence of that scheme weathering through the paint on 4319 in 1976.
