Classic UP :
When the SLRG bought 2-8-0 #18 from the guy in Hood River OR, we had it shipped by flat car to Alamosa. Because of its height, it was routed through Cheyenne, We were tracing the car along its route and when it left Ogden we were horrified that it was going south and east over the former D&RGW - and Moffat Tunnel. Some body saw "Alamosa" on the waybill and sent it down the Ro Grande without checking the height restrictions. We started making lots of phone calls and finally got the 18 stopped in Grand Junction, where it sat for several days while somebody figured out what to do next. Finally 18 went back west, over Soldier Summit and to Odgen where to eventually went east over the UP, then south to Denver, down the Joint Line, and to Walsenburg, arriving about 20 days late......
At least it made it, and we didn't have to dig it out of a collapsed tunnel west of Denver...........
