Don't hear much about the 42" gauge lines in Australia, although the proliferation of wider gauges was known to have been a result of the original chief engineer's preferences. Sounds like Australia in the early days operated more as independent states rather than as a unified nation when it came to railways.
The East African Railways, Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika, were meter gauge and were supplied with equipment and operating personnel from India. I think the Indian influence was a bigger factor than the fact that Tanganyika was originally a German colony.
