#20 ran right to the end of the RGS and was put away and not operationally fooled with until we got it. The myriad repairs done on the locomotive by the RGS to keep it running is indicative of some pretty talented people working under less than stellar circumstances with no money.
Our goal from the beginning has been to save as much original material as possible. This saves money in materials, but those savings are more than eaten up by time spent saving the original parts. From a historical standpoint, I believe this is the only responsible thing to do with such an iconic artifact. Mechanically, we have been able to save a remarkable amount of #20. You will not be looking at George Washington's hatchet when you see her operate.
As to cost, when you look at what other restorations have cost and their scope, I believe #20 will compare very favorably considering the end product. With proper care, she should be good for generations to come.
