Some general comments about research libraries:
Research libraries and archive facilities generally do not allow users to wonder through the shelves. like you can at a community lending library. They will often have generally used reference books available in the reading room; and these will generally be self-serve. Also special rules about handling material, using pencils (not pens), and having copies made will be provided and often users have to sign the list.
Be prepared to spend time looking at collection guides (printed or computerized) to find what you are looking for and then requesting the item(s) or storage box to be brought to the reading table. Often the librarian or archivist (and their memory) can be the best collection guide.
Asking the right question will get the right answer/material.
