Headlights are an important tool.

From what I recall of C&TS operating rules, the headlight is to be on full if the train is occupying the main line. It should be on dim if the train is in a siding during a meet, this way the crew of the oncoming train will have a good visual indicator from a greater distance to let them know if the opposing train is in the clear and the main track is open.

Headlights ain't just for nighttime!
