I believe the vehicle behind the loco is a "brake wagon." Since the cane cars do not have brakes and use a link and pin type coupling, there is major slack action with long trains of cane. The brake wagon helps the locomotive control the slack action. Some of them are at the rear of the train and are radio controlled. The brake wagons generally have an air compressor powered by a diesel engine and a brake valve and were ballasted to provide braking weight.
