The Ka's were so ugly that NZR felt obligated to stick a bag over the class's head. The K-28 was ugly enough that the Rio Grande should have stuck a bag over that one. NZR Kb's and the Oahu Railway engines illustrate that neither design was a hopeless case from an appearance standpoint. At any rate, form follows function and both classes gave good service in their respective environments.
If you want to make a direct comparison, I believe NZR used British-style tractive effort calculations, which means by U.S. methods they would have had somewhat larger values. Equalized accordingly, J's were roughly on par with K-27's/28's and booster-equipped Kb's could manage higher starting tractive effort than K-37's could, while maintaining the ability to run mile-a-minute speeds if they had to. On the other hand I sincerely doubt they would have cared to pick their way around 30 degree curves.
