Jerry, I have to side with Chris on this one. While I am a big D&RGW fan and like all their engines, I would say the NZ engine is far better looking with the pilot mounted pumps and shield covering. Lima did that on all those popular 2-8-4's like NKP 765. UP 800's the same thing.
As for K36's riding rough in your cab rides, I thought 489 rode pretty good in 2014 when I rode from Antonito to Sublette. Maybe the railroad you rode the cab on, and the time period makes a big difference.
Of the 4 K class engines stuff running the K-28 would fall into the lower half of the bunch as far as appearance is concerned. I do like them just because they are "Different" from all the K-36's still running. I would take a K-37 over one as far as looks are concerned.
