If I interpret your description correctly, then yes – there is a left turn leaving Sublette westbound, then a sharp right turn through a cut, and then another sharper – or at least longer – left turn.  I had planned the head-on shot that you like (above), but set up the tripod so that I could swing around and get the going-away shot as an after-thought.  Only when the developed slides came back did I really see the brakeman easing his way along the slippery roof-walks / running boards that IMHO is a more unique photo (see [ngdiscussion.net]).
