My dad traveled from Hiawatha, Utah to boot camp at the Navy's Great Lakes base in 1944, if that counts. He said it was very hot, and they had every window and clerestory window open and were given no notice before entering the Moffat Tunnel.

About fourteen months later he was on liberty in Tokyo. Quite a journey for a kid from a Utah coal "camp" as he used to call it.
