Good question, Hank -

I very VAGUELY remember reading MANY years ago that the K-27's were considered to be too heavy for one stretch of the line somewhere between Gunnison and Montrose, so other than the long way around via the RGS to Durango and then through Alamosa the only way to get #454 to Salida would be to pull her DIT with every drop of water drained from her boiler to make her as light as possible.  I have no idea as to whether the air pump, bell, and anything else "easily" removable - such as her main & side rods - was pulled off her as well.
