I thought the same thing, until we saw the footage from Jim Holmes he shot in the 1950's and 1960's.
He captured 3 different moves of engines (2 each time) going around the loop. In our preview for this recent release
we have a short clip at the 43 second mark showing the duo on the loop and the flour mill in the background. As I said
there were 3 different scenes of engines on the loop. There is also a scene of 497 on the turntable in 1963. Not sure
what the logic for turning the engines on the loop was except I suspect the engines being stored over near the loop made it easier to just run
them around the loop versus backing each and using the turntable.
