Non-railfan stuff in Durango

August 02, 2003 05:16PM
After 19 years of marriage I have worn my wife down into agreeing to go on vacation in Colorado in the summer of 04. She is hesitant to agree to go to Durango because she knows my grandfather got me hooked on narrow gauge there as a kid.
Since I am not really interested in the non-train stuff, can anyone tell me what there is to do in the Durango AREA besides ride the train? I remember the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde and that is about it.
Is the shopping there good and will it take up an entire day so I could chase the train?
When is the best time to visit?
Info needed quickly!
Thanks.
