Los Angeles regional commuter operation is Metrolink. As several of the secondary lines was being rebuilt 25 years ago (yes, it is that old) I head the supervising civil engineer (an ex-SP man) give a talk to the local R&LHS Chapter. He said that one of the track contractors who was bidding on rebuilding the one of the lines asked to submit an alternate bid using concrete ties instead of wood. The concrete ties cost less and that was what was used on the line through Covina -- they are still there.
