MP 329 crossing Cumbres Creek
Rolling into Osier
Osier waiting for Westbound #1 to show behind 487
400+ mm of telephoto and 2X converter looking down toward Phantom Curve
#4 with 488 on the point got around the Stock Train at Toltec. I rolled down to Sublette in time to catch 488 head east.
A few points to ponder about late Sept, 1980:
The C&TS had been in existence for only 10 years.
The C&TS had been hauling passengers for only 9 years.
1980 was the first year of two - train operation.
488 had only been put into service the year before. I hadn't run since 1966.
484 was running its last year on its 1966 D&RGW overhaul. 484's driver's were REAL bad. The #3 tire had double flanges so deep, you could have put them on backwards and still stayed on the track.... 484 rode real rough - especially over switches. 484 would be set aside at the end of the 1980 season and not get overhauled and returned to service until 1985.
489 was in the Chama shop being overhauled. It had not been run since the D&RGW retired in 1961.
