Well, the D&RGW did that in the late 1920's after they upgraded the RGS just enough to handle K-27/28.
When Victor Miller took over as reciever, one of the first things he did was get the T-19's, C-17 & C-19's back into running order and returned the leased mudhens to the Grande.
With exceptions in times of higher traffic, like the stock rushes, when a mudhen (usually 455) or two might be rented, these 6 engines handled alomost all of the RGS trffic through the 1930's.
After Mr. MIller left, the leasing of mudhens became more and more common and several of the older engines were scrapped (22, 25, 40) or set aside needing work (41 & 42 to a degree) over the period 1940-48 and the mudhens mostly took over for the last few years.
RGS also had an incentive to keep using lighter engines, especially on the section from Rico to about Glencoe where the combination of lighter rail (mostly 40 lb) and dirt (mud) bllast made the track "soft" in Spring...
