Hi,
When I first visited Durango in 1972 (I was 16 at the time), Mom, Dad, my sister and I visited many of the stores. The thing that stands out most in my mind was the Sears-like store there (I think it was a Montgomery Ward). When we walked in, we found a section that sold saddles, boots, ropes, and other wrangler type items. Durango was a great step back in time then. Over the years until my last visit in 1999, Durango changed from a working man's town (supporting local ranching, the railroad, and so forth) into a tourist town in feel. Isolated spots still had the feel of 1972. Places like the Durango Diner. I hope it is still there.
Mom, being from Pennsylvania, always took us to a diner when we traveled to the Northeast. When Mom and I saw the Durango Diner (c1984 IIRC), we had to try it and fell in love with it.
I hope Chama does not become too tourist trap like. It is a wonderful place to visit.
