You could also make a trip over to Gunnison if you're staying in Salida. The museum there is super cool *bias alert* and between the train, cars, and the tractor collection a 5 year old can be entertained for a couple hours. There's a kid's fishing pond in the park next to the museum. Then you could head up to CB and explore the town and go to the children's museum there. Speaking from my own personal experience from family vacations there my parents would usually let me run around with the other kids at the city park in CB leaving me pleasantly tired for the drive back to Grandma's in Gunnison. Gunni and CB would make a nice little day trip with much foaming provided, the depot in CB isn't too far from the park either.
