Jason, If you could stay in Chama I would take him for a walk around the Chama yards the night before your trip to get him excited. If possible time it so he can see that day's trip arrive. I think he'll be thoroughly tired after the trip itself. If you stay a second night then you can chase the next's day's train most of the way to the pass. He should like that.
