0400 was painted with the sunrise on both sides. As seen in this photo published in sunset on the RGS vol 2. The Al Choine photo posted by Dick bell shows the other side.
It is by belief that 455, 40, and 0400 we're the first to receive the sunrise and we're done so with aluminum paint left over from the geese. As somewhat of an experiment. Later equipment seem to have received the standard white lettering. The trim on 0400 also appears to be aluminum. Again why not, we know they had aluminum paint. Jerry said when he bought 0400 the inside was painted aluminum. (I'm not saying the interior was painted this way in 1940, just that we know for a fact it was at some point.)
For an example here is my HOn3 model of 0400 with aluminum trim and decals. Still don't believe me, hold a white sheet of paper next to the lettering on 0400 in the color Al Choine photo. Seems a little silvery grey.
