River run was used in the before crushed stone because it was cheaper than buying crushed stone and was also much easier to get in the 50's and 60's. Crushed stone didn't really begin getting used until much later years. There were many rail lines in the 70's and 80's that had river run stone and had plain gravel and cinders still in use because the railroads couldnt afford to resurface certain line. Rather because it was fading out, or simply because they just didn't have money.
