That is actually the third bridge at that site. The other adjoining span was removed. The first bridge was washed away very early on. The second bridge, that sat on the unused pier, was washed away in the great Animas River flood that took out all bridges across the river as far down stream as Utah. If you get the chance to explore the footings along the bank, you can still see all three sets of piers.
