To my unfulfilled knowledge, there was a dinner and some alcoholic drinks that occurred on a single day in the late 80's (or maybe early 90's) that included some of today's popular Fn3 manufacturers. By the end of this meal, 1:24th scale was dead and 1:20.3 became the focus of future markets.
Much like all of railroad history, decisions were made with the influence of money. I am glad that F scale exists, and I am glad that I model in Hn3 (1:24th n3). I have always wanted to scratch build my own equipment, and the fact that nothing currently is manufactured in my scale makes me more proud of my models...

*Edit: I still would like to get my hands on a 1:24th scale PSC K-27. Several were built. Or, a 1:24th scale PSC K-36, which never left the prototype stage...
