I vaguely remember S.P.'s 4-10-2's from my childhood as being almost as much of a continuous "whoosh" as the exhaust of the cab-forwards when pulling a fast freight. With the additional links in their Gresley (sp?) valve gear, I would guess the extra slop resulting from even a little wear would make it really hard to keep the timing
square 'hexagonal' on either class of three-cylinder engines.
