The aprons can be very useful, depending on the terrain where the car dumps. I saw a SG air side dump car dump on an industrial spur, so a loader could place the ballast. The rail base was level with the hard packed dirt. About 1/4 of the load ended up between the rails, between the trucks. Lots of shovel work to get that car out, after the loader did what it could.
